Food & Wine

Fertile soil and the maritime climate make this region an ideal place to grow things we eat and drink. These environmental factors combined with the relaxed, easygoing nature of the region make it less pretentious and earthier than other 'foodie' destinations in Victoria and Australia.

The Geelong wine region boasts a winning combination of rich terroir and cool climate, similar to the renowned French wine regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy. The region consistently produces high-quality wine, with more than 13 Geelong wines featured in James Halliday's 'Australian Wine Companion 2012 - Best of the Best List'.

There are diversities within the greater region, spread from the maritime microclimate of The Bellarine and Surf Coast to the dark volcanic topsoils and dry, sandy outcrops of the Moorabool Valley. These sub-regional nuances add an intriguing, multi-faceted complexity to Geelong wines.

More than 40 vineyards and cellar doors in the region welcome visitors to sample their wine. Many also have restaurants, art features or accommodation on site. Visit the Wine Geelong website by clicking here.

The wine is terrific, but it's only part of the story in this region. Some specialty produce has long been established in the region, but some newer food product is beginning to make waves in the region.

Bounded on three sides by water, fresh seafood has always been a feature of the region. Recently this amazing product has become even more accessible with the emergence of local fisheries, provedores and fishermens cooperatives selling direct to the public. Portarlington mussels and Apollo Bay crayfish have long-standing reputations among the local food and restaurant crowd.

The rolling hills of the hinterland, volcanic plains and lush peninsula soil are growing all sorts of delicious treats. There are olive groves producing some of Victoria's best fruit and oil, berry farms where the family can roll up their sleeves and pick their own - the taste of fruit freshly picked by your own hand is incomparable.

Other foods are emerging too - cheese, hydroponic vegetables, eggs and other meat products are being grown locally and, in many cases, featured on the menus of local eateries.

Many of the food and wine experiences in the region have been packaged up into neat touring routes, complete with maps and information about their specific area. The Bellarine Taste Trailand Otway Harvest Trail are worth exploring. Call into a visitor information centre for a guide.

Drysdale Cheeses

Introducing Drysdale Cheeses, the first commercial goat cheese manufacturer on the Bellarine Peninsula. Registered in December 2005, Drysdale Cheeses concentrates on a range of hand made cheeses, manufactured from the high quality milk from its herd of Saanen goats. The goats live on the Scotchmans Road property in Bellarine, where they are milked daily. Drysdale Cheeses are a registered dairy herd and all of the animals are pure bred. Their diet comprises of pasture, tree cuttings, hay and a goat 'muesli', a home recipe. They also love their daily offerings of fruit and vegetable scraps from the fruit shop in Drysdale -especially watermelon!! Extra essential minerals and vitamins are administered via seaweed meal and salt licks. Although Drysdale Cheeses is not certified organic, they follow permaculture farming principles and adopt ethical animal treatment. They do not milk animals that are heavily pregnant and newborn kids will stay with their mums for those first few days of all-important colostrum (first milk). Each doe only kids once every two years, allowing for their optimal health. The milk is then transported back to the cheese making room at Drysdale. The basic method for making cheese requires pasteurisation in this country, although a small group of speciality cheesemakers are working to allow raw milk cheese to be made legal in Australia soon. After pasteurisation, cheesemaking cultures are added to the milk for flavour ripening and then an enzyme (rennet) is added to coagulate the milk, thus producing curds and whey. These cheese making procedures use only vegetarian rennet. Different varieties of cheese will then require different temperatures and different treatments. The cheeses are made in small batches and require careful aging and draining, and so may be unavailable from time to time. Drysdale Cheeses are only available locally, from selected restaurants and providers.

Manzanillo Grove

Manzanillo Grove, with over 4500 olive trees and seven different varieties, was established in 1997 in the fertile valleys of the Bellarine Peninsula Victoria near Geelong and is owned and operated by the Kint Family. The Bellarine Peninsula and their Olives in particular have a distinctive flavour that is much sought after by discerning buyers. They pride themselves in producing a fine quality Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil that is processed on the property. Manzanillo Olive Oil is not heat extracted at any stage of production and therefore is of the highest quality and has a flavour unique from their grove. Manzanillo Grove have won numerous awards which include gold for the oils and olives and grove of the year in 2011 which is the most prestigious award in the olive industry. They have a great farm shop and you can ask to see how it is all made.

Mason's Creek Olive Grove

Mason's Creek is a small producer of an exquisite extra virgin olive oil that we think is one of the Bellarine's best-kept secrets. Their dry-grown trees differentiate them from most other growers: the trees are not irrigated, but rely on natural rainfall. They yield less fruit, but Mason's Creek believe the compensation is a concentration of flavour and improved quality. The quality is assured because they have qualified for The Australian Olive Association's Code of Practice certification and have won medals at the National Extra Virgin Olive Oil shows. They manage their 1200 grove in the most environmentally-friendly and sustainable way they can by: - Releasing ladybirds to eat scale - Painting horticultural glue around the trunks to stop ants farming the scale - Not irrigating - relying on natural rainfall - Controlling weeds by mulching instead of poisoning - Applying biological crop nutrition - Applying untreated animal manure

The wine is made with two outstanding wine makers of the region. Ray Nadeson and Maree Collis. We also source Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz grapes from the Harcourt Valley near Bendigo. We look forward to welcoming you to our vineyard' Will Derham, Vigneron. All wines are made on site in the small hands on facility. Banks Road also make wine for some of the other vineyards around area. They are very passionate about their wine and enjoy the closeness to their produce that being a small winery gives them. From bud burst in the spring to bottling the wine, sometimes years later, they see each vintage evolve. Their wines have received many accolades at shows and in reviews by wine writers. Their recently completed cellar door is open from Thursday to Sunday 11.00am - 5.00pm or by appointment. As well as tasting each of the wines you can enjoy a light lunch and a glass of wine whilst enjoying the view over the vineyard to the Rip.

Barrgowan Vineyard

The Barrgowan Vineyard and Winery is owned and operated by Dick and Dib Simonsen. Vines were planted in 1994 with the objective of producing a high quality Shiraz for private consumption. This specialisation in Shiraz continues and the high quality is reflected in an impressive list of awards since 1998. The production is very small from the 1/2 acre of vines, 50 cases in 2003 rising to an expected 200 cases in 2010 with no plans to expand further. This will ensure the continued high quality and attention to detail. The vineyard is unusual in that five different clones of Shiraz are planted, and Barrgowan Vineyard believe that each clone adds just a little extra complexity to the finished wine. Barrgowan Vineyard hand prune the vines, hand pick the fruit and basket press manually. Diligence, care and gentleness are applied at all stages of the wine making process; for example, most wine transfer is achieved by gravity, not pumped. By scientific measurement during the wine making process, we ensure the absolute minimum use of additives. The overall criterion is quality, not quantity! The wine matures for 12+ months in the best, ultra fine grained French oak barrels available, and do not blend, filter or fine. Barrgowan Vineyard do not have a distributor, all wine is sold by word of mouth, mail order or email. If you would like to be on our mailing list, or order wine.
