Perched above the point where Port Phillip Bay meets Bass
Strait, Point Lonsdale boasts both sheltered bay beaches and a
dramatic and breathtaking strip of rugged ocean frontage where the
Western Victorian surf coast begins.
Point Lonsdale has a small strip of shops facing the front
beach, including clothing and homewares boutiques, several cafes
and take-away food stores and a supermarket. There are public
barbecues and a children's playground on the main strip with sea
views towards Portsea.
The Rip View Lookout is a great place to enjoy the views across
Port Phillip heads and watch the tankers, container ships and
cruise liners and boats of all sizes and descriptions being guided
through the narrow heads by the Port Phillip Sea Pilot. All marine
traffic bound for Melbourne passes through Port Phillip Heads. From
there you can walk to the lighthouse, along the pier to see what's
biting and visit Buckley's Cave.
