Theatre, music & the arts

There is a lively music scene in the region, with many towns and villages hosting some of the country's favourite concerts and music festivals.  Falls Festival at Lorne, the Queenscliff Music Festival, Apollo Bay Music Festival and Meredith Music Festival are all popular destinations, attracting quality performers and supportive crowds.  The Blues Train, based in Queenscliff, transforms the vintage steam trains of the Bellarine Railway into a rockin' and rollin' good time.  Four of Australia's best blues acts perform in the four train carriages, making it a progressive party you'll never forget.

Geetroit rocks on the March long weekend with Motor City Music Festival hitting town on 5 stages over 3 days.  Friday and Saturday are for grown ups, while the Sunday family day includes cool tunes, carnival rides and fireworks.

Motor City Music Festival

Theatre buffs will find something of interest across the region. As well as the main performing arts centres in larger towns that host a variety of plays, shows and concerts, there are many small theatres in towns and villages where local theatre groups and travelling performers can be seen.

The Geelong Gallery houses a fantastic collection of art including well known pieces by Eugene von Guerard, Frederick McCubbin, Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton.  Entry is free.  The Geelong Gallery is just one of the places to visit on the Central Geelong Arts & Culture Walking Trails map, which is available at local visitor information centres.  The guide also has details and maps for public art, iconic heritage buildings, museums, galleries and the Geelong Botanic Gardens.  It is also available for download by clicking here.

Highlights

Edge Gallery Lorne

Edge Gallery Lorne showcases the beautiful Fine Art Landscape Photography of multi-international award winning Australian photographer, Will Dielenberg. Will's imagery is greatly influenced by coastal Southern Victoria, having lived, surfed and photographed the Great Ocean Road coastline for almost 40 years. It's the love and affinity that he has for the region that continues to motivate and inspire. Will's art in imaging is not restricted to the Surfcoast and you will find many unique works representing the iconic Australian destinations and also those magical hard to reach locations known to very few. From the brilliance of the largest Limited Edition prints, destined to grace the walls of the largest homes, corporate and hotel receptions, to the broad range of Open Edition prints available in sizes to suit even the smallest of rooms, there is something for everyone. Whether it be to experience the luminance, colour and composition of one of Will's two metre masterpieces or if you are considering a smaller print or something in between, Edge Gallery is must see experience when you are next in Lorne. The Blues Train

Victoria's historic coastal town of Queenscliff is home to the world's one and only Blues Train. It is a unique experience that combines four of Australia's best live acts and the beautiful scenery of the Bellarine Peninsula on the Drysdale Railway line while aboard a real moving vintage steam train. It is one of Australia's most spectacular entertainment experiences - it is a mini festival in one night and a progressive party you'll never forget. Nothing captures the spirit of the blues quite like a steam train. Listening to the train whistle and the clickety-clack on the tracks you can imagine the old blues masters jamming it up on Mississippi freight trains as they were 'ridin' the blinds' around America's deep south. The Blues Train leaves Queenscliff Railway Station after guests have enjoyed a delicious meal complemented by fine Australian and local wines. The steam train then makes its way along 16 kilometres of track, gently rocking from side to side, seemingly in beat with the music. At each of the stops, Suma Park and Drysdale, revellers swap carriages to see another of the acts, so by the end of the night patrons have seen all four acts performing on the train. Drinks are available from the mobile bar that miraculously appears on each platform (from the converted guard's van). You can sit back, relax and listen to the music with a drinking on one of the seated carriages or get up and boogie the blues away in one of the dance carriages. Please visit the website for the different show dates.

Motor City Music Festival

Geetroit Rocks as Motor City Music Festival celebrates Geelong's past and present, with a great live soundtrack. Whether you like rock, roots, blues, country or a great tribute act, we've got you covered. Friday night and Saturday is for the over 18s. You can also share your photos in real time, as a live feed to Motor City Music Festival wall will be showcasing your snaps. On Sunday kids are free so bring the tribe and enjoy quality family entertainment. There will be vintage steam engine displays and a steam truck driving around the site dispensing Beer Goodness. Watch the air guitar competition, Totem Tennis Open or compete in the colouring in competition. There is a great line-up of children's entertainment. The weekend will culminate in the now-famous Motor City Music Festival fireworks display. With free on-site parking and free carnival rides all weekend, head to Geelong's own Motor City Music Festival and help celebrate what's great about the town.
