What's going on?
The soon to be completed Vue Luxury
Apartments on Bellerine Street is set to become Geelong's most
luxurious accommodation option. With its strong design appeal,
choice of materials and an artistic emphasis to engage the
community, it will stand as the new benchmark in quality short stay
accommodation. The development of the apartments coincides with the
development of a Strategy and Policy supporting Art in the
Municipality's Public Realm. The strategy, which is being developed
by the City of Greater Geelong, will guide the commissioning and
care of the City's public art collection for the benefit of the
region's communities.
Vue Apartments and the City of Greater
Geelong have teamed up to present The Spirit of Geelong
Public Art Competition, which will showcase
the tremendous depth of creative talent on offer across the
region. The winner will enjoy a cash prize and have their artwork
displayed on a banner on the facade of the Vue Short Stay
Apartments.
The brief
Residents and artists from Geelong and
surrounding areas are invited to submit an artwork that captures
their personal view of the community and/or environment that is
Geelong. This is a unique opportunity for the people of Geelong to
express how they feel about their city and how the city is
reflected through their eyes.
Vue Luxury Apartments and the City of
Greater Geelong are offering a blank canvas, literally, and as such
a chance to create an iconic public art piece that can be enjoyed
by the whole community, one, which will bring the community
together and highlight the enormous variety of talent within
Geelong. Public art plays an important role in our society and will
become an increasingly important feature of life across the region

City of Greater Geelong and Public Art
The City of Greater Geelong is currently developing a Strategy and
Policy supporting Art in the Municipality's Public Realm. It is
designed to guide the commissioning and care of the City's public
art collection for the benefit of the region's communities.
The Strategy is now available for public comment and will be
reviewed in light of
community feedback received before it is formally adopted by
Council.
The Vue Apartment's Public Art Platform - Design Competition
coincides with the
release of the City of Greater Geelong's Draft Strategy for Art in
the Public Realm and the Competitions theme; 'Capture the Spirit of
Geelong' responds to the primary objective of the draft Strategy
which is 'Connecting People, Place and environment'.
The project will demonstrate the potential for public art to
benefit the community
through: improving urban design outcomes; community engagement; and
providing opportunities for local artists.
The project provides an example of one method for successful
production of public art: partnership between CoGG and the private
sector which is supported by the Strategy.
The Design Competition provides the opportunity for everyone to
participate in a
conversation about the relevance of public art to the region either
by designing an
artwork for the billboard (platform) or by providing comment on the
draft Strategy for Art in Public Places.
Thoughts and comments may be prompted by artworks proposed for the
platform or reactions community members have to the presence of a
major new artwork platform in Central Geelong.
The artwork platform allows for a change of art every year or two
providing further
opportunities for investigation of themes and artwork styles,
maintaining a fresh
discussion about art, Geelong, place and the future.
The inclusion of public art in the Vue Apartments has been
supported by CoGG's
Planning processes and provides evidence of a progressive Council
working to
promote life and opportunity to the City.
