Two wheels are better than none. And in some places they are
better than four. Exploring the region on a bicycle offers a
different perspective on some of the most popular landmarks, as
well as access into some areas where the path is less
travelled.
Throughout the region there are places to take your bike,
whatever your preferred style of cycling. Dedicated mountain bike
trails have been developed in the You Yangs, Anglesea and Forrest.
These have various levels of difficulty and cater for all levels of
ability. These sites also host some of the mountain bike
community's best events, including the Kona Odyssey mountain bike
marathon and the Forrest 6 hour event.
There are several rail trails in the region for slightly tamer
off road action. The Bellarine Rail Trail runs from the South
Geelong railway station to Queenscliff, the section between
Drysdale and Queenscliff still an active route for the restored
heritage steam trains of the Bellarine Railway. The Old Beechy
Trail runs through some of the most spectacular and ancient areas
of the Otway National Park.
This region is home to some of the most spectacular road cycling
routes in Australia. As well as the obvious Great Ocean Road route,
there are some terrific rides around Geelong, The Bellarine and the
hinterland areas that will take in an adequate balance of
challenging hills and rewarding views.
For the casual cyclist or beginner there are bike hire
facilities in the region, as well as cycle supply shops and large
sports store that carry cycle gear.
