Fertile soil and the maritime climate make this region an ideal place to grow things we eat and drink. These environmental factors combined with the relaxed, easygoing nature of the region make it less pretentious and earthier than other 'foodie' destinations in Victoria and Australia.

The Geelong wine region boasts a winning combination of rich terroir and cool climate, similar to the renowned French wine regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy. The region consistently produces high-quality wine, with more than 13 Geelong wines featured in James Halliday's 'Australian Wine Companion 2012 - Best of the Best List'.

There are diversities within the greater region, spread from the maritime microclimate of The Bellarine and Surf Coast to the dark volcanic topsoils and dry, sandy outcrops of the Moorabool Valley. These sub-regional nuances add an intriguing, multi-faceted complexity to Geelong wines.

The wine is terrific, but it's only part of the story in this region. Some specialty produce has long been established in the region, but some newer food product is beginning to make waves in the region.

Bounded on three sides by water, fresh seafood has always been a feature of the region. Recently this amazing product has become even more accessible with the emergence of local fisheries, provedores and fishermens cooperatives selling direct to the public. Portarlington mussels and Apollo Bay crayfish have long-standing reputations among the local food and restaurant crowd.

The rolling hills of the hinterland, volcanic plains and lush peninsula soil are growing all sorts of delicious treats. There are olive groves producing some of Victoria's best fruit and oil, berry farms where the family can roll up their sleeves and pick their own - the taste of fruit freshly picked by your own hand is incomparable.

Other foods are emerging too - cheese, hydroponic vegetables, eggs and other meat products are being grown locally and, in many cases, featured on the menus of local eateries.

Many of the food and wine experiences in the region have been packaged up into neat touring routes, complete with maps and information about their specific area. The Bellarine Taste Trail and Otway Harvest Trail are worth exploring. Call into a visitor information centre for a guide.

Chris's Beacon Point Restaurant and Villas

Chris's Villas offer accommodation all year round and many diners choose to stay the night after enjoying a meal and a fine wine or two. Chris's is located high above Skenes Creek and the villas are elevated, so the impact of the ocean views is stunning. Recently renovated, the villas are contemporary and well equipped. All of the apartments are self-contained and contemporary, with modern fittings and floor-to-ceiling windows, a balcony and a dizzying sea view. A complimentary Continental breakfast is included in the tariff. This is served in Chris's Restaurant from the Melbourne Cup to Easter and is provided in your room out of season. Chris's Restaurant and Villas is an icon of the Great Ocean Road. A personal approach to hospitality has made Chris's one of the most loved places in the region and a passion for the food of Southern Europe combined with the freshest and purest produce has made the cuisine world famous. "From the ashes of last years fire has risen a splendid new structure of glass and timber, cleverly angled and tiered to make the most of the panorama. The restaurant looks down on Skenes Creek meandering down to the Southern Ocean below, with Apollo Bay's boat harbour in the distance. Otway Harvest Trail

The unique combination of aspect, soils, climate and farming practices of the Otway hinterland produce distinctive and exceptional flavours in our produce that cannot be found anywhere else. The Otway Harvest Trail is a celebration of the seasons that bestow their rich bounty on a luscious part of Victoria. Spring is a time of plenty and promise. As the winter gives way to warm sunny days, see the bright patchwork of yellow canola fields appear, the farmers out mowing their grass and baling their hay and the spring lambs frolicking on a frosty morning. The first berries appear. Green shoots can be seen in the vineyards as the vines burst their buds and flowers and spring vegetables appear at farm gate stalls. New release wines can be found at cellar doors. Summer is all about being outdoors. All the berry farms have opened and their sweet juicy berries are ripe for the picking. The lush emerald green of the vineyards become more distinctive as the land around slowly turns a golden brown. People clamour for outdoor tables and chairs at cafés and restaurants to soak in the warm days, mild evenings and glorious pastel sunsets. Local wines and beers go so well with the seafood, vegetables and fruits in plentiful supply. Wine lovers are welcomed at cellar doors and their curiosity is rewarded with the discovery of new wines. Autumn is a time of harvest. The days become still and warm, and the crisp cool nights are perfect for sleeping. With the winter rains not far away, the wineries are busy harvesting their fruit and the vignerons hands become garnet red as they nurture the new wines through their ferment. It is also time to harvest the olives from their groves before the first frosts of winter arrive. Smell the fruity aroma of the extra virgin olive oil as it flows from the presses. The last of the berries are picked. Winter is a time for taking stock of the seasons passed and making ready for the farming year ahead. The farmers plough their fields and sow their winter crops. Vineyards, olive groves and orchards are pruned and readied for a new season. Fences are mended. The days shorten and become colder. Cattle turn their backs to the wind. Dams pent over the summer begin to refill. Root vegetables appear at the farm gate stands. It’s a time for reflection and for savouring the joys of recently harvested produce. Lengthy conversations occur over bottles of wine in front of toasty log fires. Eventually the tell tale signs of another Spring begin to appear.

Otways Wine & Food Lovers Trail

This trail traverses some of the most fertile land in Victoria which grows some of the state’s best produce. Breakfast can be enjoyed anywhere between Apollo Bay and Lorne before turning left into the Otways hinterland. The Deans Marsh and Pennyroyal area is renowned for its berries, olives and wineries. Further North, Birregurra is the hub of Otway produce and the perfect lunch stop. Heading back towards the Great Ocean Road via Forrest, which has a boutique brewery and an atmospheric cafe. Continue South through towering rainforest to Apollo Bay. The Colac Botanic Café

Peveril Vineyard/Beechy Berries

The Peveril Vineyard cellar door is in a shed directly off the Colac-Lavers Hill Road. It is built from local timbers by a local It's small and tasteful. The wines, like the berries, are grown with natural nutrients and no chemicals. The sole exception is the anti-fungal spray used sparingly on the vines. Other than that the grapes are the product of pure water and soil. Small, tasteful, clean. That's the way the Rossiter family want to go on this patch of perfection. The name Peveril is a tribute to Marg's three aunts, Peggy, Vera and Lil. The vineyards, orchard and garden are a tribute to the earthy visions and energy of owners, Bruce and Marg. All you have to do is take that small turn into their drive to enjoy the splendid fruits of their loving labours

St Anne's Vineyard

St Anne's Vineyards is a family owned wine company that was established some 30 years ago in the Pentland Hills at Myrniong, Southern Victoria. Yeowarra Hill

From the beginning Yeowarra Hill have endeavoured to produce quality wines by taking advantage of the verdant ground and fertile soil that gives the area a rich agricultural history. There wines are produced from fruit grown solely in their vineyard, pruned to achieve excellent quality fruit in low yields. The hand-picked crop is made in small quantities in an attempt to reflect the elegant complexities and varietal character of the cool climate of the region. The quality fruit is further enhanced by the expertise of winemaker Lee Evans, Kurabana Estate. The dedication to excellence in the vineyard and meticulous care and attention produced immediate results with their first vintage (2006) Chardonnay being awarded a medal at the 2007 Geelong Wine Show. With the 2007 Chardonnay backing up with a medal in the following year. The James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 'highly recommended' the chardonnay saying it had great quality style and character, worthy of a place in any cellar.

Gentle Annie Berry Gardens

Doug and Leanne Campbell look forward to welcoming you and your family to Gentle Annie, their berry farm nestled in the picturesque Pennyroyal Valley near Deans Marsh. Spend time wandering the farm picking a variety of berries and orchard fruit, or simply drop in for a coffee and piece of cake, Devonshire tea, lunch or afternoon tea in the licensed cafe. In the produce shop you will find a variety of Gentle Annie's jams, chutney's, sorbets and a selection of local produce.

Gosling Creek

Nestled in the stunning Otway Ranges of South Victoria, come celebrate what Gosling Creek Wines have to offer. Gosling Creek flows from the Great Otway National Park through fern gullies and picturesque rolling countryside to the Barwon River. The vineyard is located on the northern slopes, where the maritime influences of Bass Strait make an ideal location for cooler-climate grapes. The Gosling Creek wines range from pinot noir, which was the first set of 2000 vines planted, 10 years ago. Following that there are 2500 Shiraz and 2000 Riesling vines. The cellar door is open on weekends from September to June and everyday in January. Gosling Creek serves light lunches over the warmer months.

Marks Restaurant

Marks Restaurant, featured in the 2011 Good Food Guide and celebrating over 20 years on the Surf coast. Quality whiting and salmon are coming into the kitchen with more frequency. Lamb tenderloins from organic sheep are delicious, they are pairing them up with polenta chips and tapenade from their own olives. Nice stunning farmed rabbits from GB foods and Calamari are great too, especially when paired up with some spinach and Japanese flavours - one of their classics. School prawns make a welcome comeback. Regulars keep asking for Marks homemade pasta; at the moment they are doing it with juicy shelled mussels from Clifton Springs (sweet) chilli,garlic, tomato & spring onions. Perhaps with slow cooked osso buco or even rabbit. Simple flavours, competent cooking, local produce whilst not turning our back on what the rest of the world has to offer. That's us.

Ocean Corner Cafe is a family run cafe which offers both inside and outside dining areas and can seat up to 76 patrons. The cafe also serves as a quick take away service for the Anglesea main beach and those passing though Anglesea on the Great Ocean Road. Famous for its home made Great Aussie Meat Pie Competition award winning pies also available is an all day breakfast, lunch (including sandwiches, rolls, wraps and foccacia's, sausage rolls, pasties, quiches, cakes and slices) and takeaway family meals. The cafe is open seven days a week from 7.30am till late and is both fully Licensed and BYO serving a selection of beers and a range of wine from the local region. The Restaurant at The Old Lorne Grove Olives farm is one of a favourite for a leisurely lunch. It is perfectly situated in the foothills of the Otway ranges, just 20 minutes from Lorne. Come and enjoy the beautiful scenery and a unique, relaxed atmosphere. The Old Lorne Grove Olives cafe and art gallery is nestled amongst the groves with 1300 olive trees. The serene location provides a beautiful afternoon of wine, great food and breathtaking views of the rolling hills of Deans Marsh and surrounds. Indulge in a taste of the Mediterranean with an Italian inspired menu. Break some Ciabatta and soak up the Victorian flavourful olive oils dunked in dukka or simply enjoy a glass of wine and the view. Then work it off with a game of pétanque or a stroll around the grove. The art gallery has been inspired by the many and varied talents of the local Otways artists. From paintings and pottery to glassware and garden additions, there is something for everyone.

Otway Estate

'Otway Estate occupies a forest clearing in the northern foothills of the lovely Otway range. The winery has grown in recent years and it's been developing as an event location. Good cool climate wines are a mainstay, but there's also farmhouse cider and handmade beer. The Prickly Moses brewery offers a range of artisan brews on tap and in bottle, and the smart, Slow Food-inspired café specialises in serving fresh regional produce beside a wide veranda with forest views over the dam. An eclectic mix of musicians appears regularly, and might include jazz or even flamenco performers.' RALPH KYTE-POWELL Otway Estate produces a liquid to quench any thirst, from their fine wines and premium beers to their seasonal cordial selections. Each beverage is teamed with its own tasting platter full of scrumptious local delicacies prepared on site. A change of ownership in 1996 saw the planting of more vines expanding the varieties to include Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Semillon, Riesling, Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc. Otway Estate offers luxury adult accommodation set amongst the bush with views over the vines. Luxurious spa baths and complete privacy, the cottages really do offer a unique getaway and enable guests to experience the peace and tranquillity of the bush. Otway Estate boasts a winery, brewery, gallery, function facility, café/lounge and expanded cellar door.The cellar door has a retail food outlet enabling the visitor to sample regional and home made produce. While the café, lounge or deck provides a place to relax and enjoy a tasting plate teamed with your favourite beverage. Any beer connoisseur knows you need good water to make good beer. Their beers are produced using pure Otway rainwater - so not only are they good beers, they are sensational beers. Their first beer was released early March 2007.

Apollo Bay Hotel

The Apollo Bay hotel is situated on the Great Ocean Road, three hours drive west of Melbourne on one of the most scenic drives in the world. The Hotel with elevated streetscape dining offers locals and tourists a wonderful hotel experience whilst enjoying the atmosphere of a small coastal town. Whether it's the hectic summer holiday period or the quiet winter months enjoying local musical talent beside the fire in the bar, having a few beers and playing a game of pool, all whilst enjoying the great atmosphere at the Apollo Bay Hotel. The reputation for great food and friendly service make the Apollo Bay Hotel the place to visit. The bistro is open seven days, lunch and dinner all year round except for Christmas Day. A public bar, bottle shop and function room are available.

Ba Ba Lu Bar

Ba Ba Lu Restaurant & Bar offers all day service Breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as coffee and a delicious selection of homemade pastries and cakes. The entire menu is available takeaway including fresh juice, coffee and smoothies. The food is all made on site and where available local and organic produced is used. Children are also catered for and gluten free and vegetarian options are available. February sees the comeback of Sunday night Paella, this seafood dish is cooked for all to see in the dining room. With the food there is something for the ears with live music consisting of latin, reggae and funk. There's Someone new every week. Keep an eye out for wine dinners, bands, cabaret and comedy dinners. Be sure to book. The full a la carte menu is also available. A visit to Lorne would not be complete without a visit to Ba Ba Lu. Located at the Paris end of Lorne, just on the river, at Erskine river.

Birregurra Estate Olives

Birregurra Estate Olives began in 1999, when the perfect paddock was found on Birregurra's rich soils in Victoria's western district. Once the land was secured, planting began and the dream became real. Four and a half thousand olive trees have since been planted. Most of them are Kalamata and they have been producing a continually increasing crop of delicious olives ever since. The olives are pickled on the property in a purpose built kitchen. Traditional recipes are used to process all the varieties of olives including, Kalamata, Italian-style black and green, 'mini Kalamata,' and Ligurian. Delicious tapenades are also available. Birregurra Estate Olives also produce first cold pressed, Extra-Virgin Olive Oil, which has the clean, grassy aroma and flavour only this kind of oil can have. Once you have had it, you'll never go back.

'The Brown Magpie cellar door is backed by a row of cypress trees populated, appropriately enough, by an extended family of industrious magpies who stalk around the vineyard with a proprietorial air. This is a tranquil spot in the Surf Coast hinterland with a plot of vineyard that looks towards Mount Moriac's gentle slopes. It's well worth a detour when you're in the region for its award-winning Shiraz and Pinot Noir.' Ralph Kyte-Powell Brown Magpie Wines is located in the picturesque hinterland of the Surf Coast and Great Ocean Road, 15 minutes Anglesea and Torquay, and 25 minutes south west of Geelong. Shane and Loretta Breheny selected the property specifically for the purpose. Planted in 2000 and 2001 the vineyard consists of nine hectares of north facing gentle slope. Dense, well established cypress trees along the borders shelter the vineyard from strong winds and moderates temperature. All wines are handcrafted on site from estate grown, hand picked fruit, and are a true reflection of the vineyard. The vineyard is ideally located for producing premium quality shiraz, pinot noir, gris and grigio, wine. The quality of the wines has been acknowledged since the first vintage in 2003, with multiple gold medals and trophies being awarded.
