Golf

With five of the top fifty rated public access courses in Australia located within this region it's little wonder many of the visitors who arrive are toting a set of golf clubs.

As well as some fantastic and historic tree-lined country courses, there is a series of newer links-style developments that are attracting attention among the golf community.

The Bellarine is a hub for golfing activity - four of those five top-fifty courses are within this compact destination, the perfect place to visit for a golf weekend.  Some of the courses have accommodation on site and all have well regarded clubhouse facilities.

Barwon Heads Golf Club and the two courses at Thirteenth Beach Golf Links are all rated inside the top fifty, and all are within the seaside village of Barwon Heads.  The clubhouse at Barwon Heads is steeped in history, while the facilities at Thirteenth Beach include bar, restaurant, conference and accommodation facilities.  The fourth top-fifty entry for Bellarine is at Curlewis Golf Club, overlooking Port Phillip Bay.

The Sands at Torquay is also ranked inside the top fifty and hosts the annual Surf Coast Knockout, a PGA Tour event.  Located within the Peppers Resort complex, the course is close to the full range of hospitality and accommodation facilities.

Highlights

Anglesea Golf Club

The Anglesea Golf Club is situated on the Great Ocean Road and is an undulating 6,074 metre Par 73 layout set in natural bushland. A feature of the course is the number of elevated greens that require plenty of thought when selecting your club. There are only 42 bunkers throughout the course which have been likened to sand-belt bunkers and coupled with eucalypt tree lined fairways combine to produce a stimulating round. Also there is the ever present resident population of Eastern Grey Kangaroos which number approximately 300. Anglesea Golf Club welcomes social golfers and social groups every day of the week, don't have golf equipment? The Pro Shop carries hire clubs, pull buggies and motorised carts. There are green fees with cheaper rates for group bookings, juniors and nine holes. If you are not interested in golf why not come along and have lunch or dinner in the Bistro over looking the 18th hole with ocean glimpses. The Bistro is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week from 9.00am till 9.00pm. The kangaroos generally come down towards the Clubhouse of an evening so visitors having a drink on the balcony or dining in our bistro have the unique experience of seeing Australian Wildlife in a natural setting.

Lonsdale Golf Club

Located at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay - only 90 minutes from Melbourne and 25 minutes from Geelong - the Lonsdale Golf Club is a highly regarded 18-hole sand belt course that can be played 12 months a year. Measuring 5710 metres for men (Par 71) and 5172 metres for women (Par 72), the course continues to receive praise from visitors, golf professionals and club members. The course offers three practice areas which includes a driving range. The Clubhouse features a welcoming atmosphere with excellent bar and dining facilities offering before and after golf snacks, lunches and A La Carte dining, plus a superb beer garden which enjoys the afternoon sun for members and visitors alike. The fully stocked Pro Shop has been totally transformed in the past three years, designed around custom fitting for drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, irons, wedges, putter and golf balls. The Pro Shop carries a number of major brands to suit a broad range of budgets. Club Professional Sean Charleston (AAA PGA Professional) has been at Lonsdale for nearly five years developing teaching programs, custom fitting, retailing and organising golf days. The teaching programs have focused on juniors, women golfers and pennant players. Sean also addresses golf fitness and the short game, and is available on a one to one basis to focus on your individual instruction needs. Golf days include the signature event The Lonsdale Classic in January, selling out within hours of entry forms being released. The Lonsdale Golf Club continues to provide a high class sand belt course, quality practice facilities and a fully stocked pro shop with Professional. The Tea Trees bistro in the Clubhouse can cater for all food and beverage requirements including functions. Please call or visit the website for more information.
