The Hawaiians call it stand, paddle and surf; the locals just
call it 'SUP'. Whatever you call it, stand-up paddle boarding is
the hottest new watersport around. And the great thing is, no
experience is needed!
Everyone from toddlers to grandparents can now enjoy the easy
fun and excitement of stand-up paddle boarding in Geelong and the
Bellarine, with Wards Stand Up Paddle Boarding (WSUP).
Shaun Ward, from WSUP, says the sport is like a cross between
surfing and canoeing, with participants standing on an oversized
board (made by Gboards in Torquay) and paddling with an extra-long
oar.
"The boards are especially weighted to provide the correct
buoyancy, making SUP super-easy to master," said Ward. "We've had
everyone from five-year-olds to a lady in her 70s doing it and we
can get them up and standing on the board in about 30 seconds."
With the sport so easy to learn, there's more time to enjoy the
sights, which can include schools of colourful fish, dolphins,
small stingrays, banjo sharks, sea jellies and crabs.
SUP is also a great way to exercise - it encourages good
posture, is gentle on joints and hips, builds endurance and core
strength and also provides a muscle workout from head to toe.
WSUP offers lessons along the Geelong Waterfront or in the safe and
protected waterways of Barwon Heads River and Ocean Grove main
beach. The activity can be enjoyed year-round, weather
permitting.
Lessons include water safety, equipment, stroke technique, local
environment and fitness. Wetsuits, boards and paddles are provided
so there's nothing to do except hop on board!
