HOW TO CELEBRATE THIS AUSTRALIA DAY LONG WEEKEND

by BETH GIBSON

Australians are known for their love of great food, a cold beer, live music and outdoor sport.

There's a little bit of everything happening across the Great Ocean Road region on the Australia Day weekend, so if you're already in the area, make sure you join in with our welcoming communities.

And, since it's a long weekend (Monday 27 January is a public holiday), jump on our accommodation planner and book a camp site, motel or something a bit more luxurious.

Here's a round up of what's happening so you don't miss out on the Aussie inspired fun!

Friday, January 24

Otway Harvest Trail's Twilight Festa - Birregurra

This is a highlight of summer in the Otways, showcasing the region's unique food and beverages. Locals and visitors can relax with a refreshing ale, cider or wine and there will be plenty of market stalls where you can purchase berries, free range beef, vegetables, cakes, sourdough and gluten-free bread, olives, preserves, honey and gin. A great post-Christmas catch up with friends. More...

Pop up cinemas - Warrnambool

Pop up cinemas showing mini documentaries about the construction of the Great Ocean Road 100 years ago will be active at The Cally Hotel site over the weekend (and until February 1). There'll also be food, drinks and live music at this family event (even the dogs can come along!).

Saturday, January 25

Lamington Feast - Bellbrae

Us Aussies love lamingtons, so from January 25-27 the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie will serve giant lamingtons, plus lamington flavored macarons, ice-cream and hot chocolate. And, if you prefer the Aussie pav, they'll be smashing one up in a sundae. Yum! Details...

This massive festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday on Portland's foreshore and will feature cooking demo's by celebrity chefs, a pop up bar, food trucks, fishing talks and workshops, markets and free children's activities and amusements including a circus workshop. There'll also be DJs on the foreshore stage and a special performance by Australian rock legend Jon Stevens.  More...

Lighthouse Open Day - Port Fairy

Have you ever wanted to see inside a real light house? Since 1859, the Griffiths Island light house has guided ships into Port Fairy and you can tour the lighthouse between 10am and 4pm both days.
