6 PLACES TO EXPLORE WHEN IT'S RAINING
by GREAT OCEAN ROAD6 places to explore along the Great Ocean Road when it’s raining - maybe even during the warmer seasons!
1. Hit the shops
Grab some bargains at the Torquay surf shop outlets on Baines Crescent, with plenty of spots close by to duck in for a coffee like Ginger Monkey Cafe or Mikro Coffee Roasters. Then around the corner, immerse yourself in surf culture at the Australian National Surf Museum. You'll also find lots of local gems in Lorne along Mountjoy Parade.
2. Learn to surf (yep, while it's raining!)
If it’s a rainy day then you’re already wet, right? Why not learn to surf! Torquay, Lorne, Warrnambool and Port Fairy all have surf lessons available and we think the rain just makes it that much more fun! And don't worry, if the water is still a bit chilly, you can grab a warmer wetsuit and barely even notice.
3. Discover chocolate heaven
Indoors, you will discover chocolate heaven at the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery in Bellbrae. The kids can even take a Junior Chocolatier Class.
4. Time for an arvo session
Spend the day exploring our local breweries and distilleries. We can't pick from Salt Brewing at Aireys Pub, Great Ocean Road Gin down the road in Aireys Inlet, Great Ocean Road Brewhouse in Apollo Bay, Noodledoof Brewing & Distilling Co in Koroit, or Forrest Brewing Company in the Otways should all be at the top of the list! Or for a more extensive list, check out our blog, Breweries & Craft Beer of the Great Ocean Road.
5. Explore the wonder of wetlands...indoors
Checkout the latest exhibition at the WAG, the Warrnambool Art Gallery - this summer they have turned their learning centre into a vibrant wetlands where kids can explore and play with oversized creatures, created by local artist Megan Nicolson.
6. Go chasing waterfalls
Our waterfalls are without a doubt most spectacular in winter, but if you score a rainy day in the warmer months - you're in luck! Head to Lorne to see an array of waterfalls (with 10 waterfalls within 10kms), or duck into the Otways and immerse yourself in awe. Check them all out here.
