The publication ‘A postal history of Portland 1834-1934’ will be launched some 180 years after the opening of Portland’s first post office. Written by historian Bernard Wallace, this book considers how the mail came and went in the early years, pioneering postmasters, the early post offices, fascinating early letters, the impact of the telegraph, the first air mail and the centenary celebrations of 1934.
