4 DAYS IN TIMBOON

By Tim Marwood, Timboon Fine Icecream

If you’re planning a mid-year winter break, Timboon is tucked away in the hinterland, just 20 minutes from Port Campbell.

Our beautiful little village, with so much to see and do, is a very accessible 2 hours, 40 minutes from Melbourne and just under 2 hours from Ballarat.

If you’re able to take a Friday and Monday off work, it’s a great spot to unwind with your partner, family or a group of friends, with plenty of accommodation options close to town:

As a local, here’s my 4 day itinerary that I often suggest to visiting family and friends:

DAY 1

INDULGE IN WHISKY AND ICECREAM

Check into your accommodation and then head into the heart of the village for a relaxing, leisurely foodie experience at the Timboon Railway Shed Distillery and our Timboon Ice Creamery right next door.

The local distiller is daring and brave, so get excited about the whisky tastings. There’s a fully licensed café/restaurant where you can order meals based on seasonal local produce. There’s also a massive provedore of gourmet goods that you can take home with you. The place is family friendly and open 7 days from 10am to 4.30pm.

After lunch, walk a few paces to our state-of-the-art building where the best ice cream in the region is made. You can choose from our signature and limited flavors, plus take home some of our staples like Vanilla, Chocolate and Espresso (we even have takeaway dog friendly ice-cream). We’re open daily from 11am to 5pm.

Get an early night, because you’ve got a big day of eating and exploring tomorrow.

DAY 3

BURN SOME ENERGY AT CHILDERS COVE

childers storyAfter all that eating, today’s the day to burn off some energy at Childers Cove and plug into nature.

My family and I love to visit this secret little cove because it’s fairly quiet in winter. Rug up, park the car at the designated car park and make your way down the stairs to your very own private beach.

Take your time wandering along the shoreline and look for little sea creatures, shells and driftwood. Sit, relax and take in the views of the ancient cliff faces, with their layers of different colored rock and stone.

It’s a wonderful way to appreciate the power of the historic Shipwreck Coast.

Direction

The Timboon-Nullawarre Road is the fastest route from Timboon to Childer's Cove. Follow the signs and watch out for wildlife.

A DAY ABOUT TOWN

kids storyBefore you head home, here are a few more things you should do and see in and around Timboon:

Rail Trestle Bridge (Curdies River Bridge)

This heritage listed trestle bridge was built in 1892 and is one of the few surviving railway structures of this type in Victoria. You can access the bridge when heading of Timboon on the Terang-Warrnambool Road, turning right just after the Shell Service Station and following the signs for 5kms.

The Corner Store

This modern one-stop-shop is where you can make your final purchase of fine cured meats, wine, beer and spirits from the region, plus cheese, breads and pastries. Take your cooler bag and fill it up!

Power Creek Reserve Playground

If you’ve come to Timboon with the kids in tow, you need to wear them out before piling them into the car for the drive home. Right behind the distillery is a modern train themed playground, skate park, barbecue area and a sloping grassy area for the kids to roll down.
