WINTER ACTIVE ADVENTURE
Marengo to Forrest
Winter is a magical time to explore the wonder of The Otways. Waterfalls are flowing freely and the rainforest is at its most enchanting. Every direction you look there is an adventure waiting to be had.
Elliot River is a great place to start, providing an easy & spectacular trail to explore that’s just a short drive from Apollo Bay. As you make your way to the river through towering Mountain Ash and lush ferny groves, you’ll be treated to remarkable coastal views of Cape Patton and Cape Otway. The moderate walk only takes about 40 minutes return and is a stunning preview of the Great Ocean Walk.
The Great Otway National Park offers a treasure-trove of natural wonder and has a hypnotic & serene stillness during the winter months. Around Beech Forest you’ll find a number of spellbinding walks and places to soak up the beauty of the rainforest; including Triplet Falls, The Redwoods, Hopetoun Falls and Beauchamp Falls.
The Waterfalls of the Otways are at their most spectacular after the Autumn rains. With more than 400 stunning waterfalls hidden around the area, many are easily accessible and provide days upon days of adventure and exploration. Beauchamp Falls is a moderate walk (around 1 hour and 15 minutes return) through luscious rainforest to the 25 metre cascade of water that flows to a deep pool surrounded by spectacular cliff faces, towering trees and fairytale ferns.
The Turton’s Track drive toward Forrest takes you on a scenic journey along the highest ridge in the Otways. Take your time, drive slowly and wind down the windows to rejuvenate the senses with a burst of fresh mountain air.
The township of Forrest is a hive of activity, providing the starting point for many walking tracks and mountain bike trails for thrill seekers. On the outskirts you’ll find Lake Elizabeth and the Barwon Reservoir - home to a thriving community of local Platypuses. While in the centre of town, a handful of cosy venues offer the perfect setting to cap off a busy day of adventure. Make sure you call into Platypi Chocolates - a local favourite for a heart-warming cup of hot chocolate.
